Moscow Ready For Anti-Globalization Protests

A special session of the Davos Economic Forum has been open in Moscow on Monday. Looking at what happened on the streets of Genoa, Seattle, Prague, and Davos Moscow police have been put on high alert. Some 1,500 militiamen are on duty checking documents up in the centre of the Russian capital and around the Marriott Grand Hotel where the session is taking place, RIA Novosti news agency reported.

Gazeta.Ru says that some 300-2000 anti-globalization protesters arrived in Moscow. According to Russia's security service 20,000 members of Russian left-wing organizations might take part in protests.

Deputy chief of the Moscow Interior Ministry department Vladimir Popov assured journalists they had enough forces to rebuff possible anti-globalization attacks. In total 30,000 militia officers have been put on guard in Moscow.

The Forum will be attended by representatives of leading western industrial corporations and banks, and international financial institutions. The Moscow Davos session focuses on future reforms, which will improve the investment climate in Russia.
